| NO BINDING CLIMATE AGREEMENT AT HEILIGENDAMM |
|
Heiligendamm (Germany), Jun 8th 2007
The worlds eight most industrialized nations (G8) failed to reach a binding agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but decided to discuss the issue within the UN.
They agreed to a non-binding goal instead: reduce emissions by 50 percent by year 2050.
Regarding the stance of US President George W. Bush, French President Nicolas Sarkozy told Thursday journalists that it took a lot of effort to manage to get a commitment to future negotiations on the issue within the UN.
The inexistence of a binding climate change-related agreement at the G8 summit was strongly criticized by environmental organizations.
Neil Adger, from the Tyndall Climate Change Research Center, in Britain, said that reaching an agreement on several goals against climate change was supposed to be a first key step, and failing to reach it will cause "a lot of pain and suffering.
